Clinician’s Eye

Exposure to art helps medical students build their observational and diagnostic ‘toolkit.’ Launched in 2013 in partnership with UVA's School of Medicine, Clinician’s Eye is based on similar programs at leading medical schools, and includes interactive tours as well as drawing and writing exercises.

Testing demonstrates measurable impact after one 2-hour workshop, with 90% of participants reporting improved observational skills, increased tolerance for ambiguity, or strengthened communication skills. In addition to the Schools of Medicine and Nursing, departments across Grounds—from the Darden School to the School of Engineering—utilize the Clinician's Eye curriculum to develop observational skills in students and as a team-building exercise among staff.
