FULL--Fralin After Five Workshop: Think Inside the Box – Cornell-Inspired Shadow Boxes

Starts on 08/12/2022 - 5:30pm

@The Fralin Museum of Art at UVA

Venue Address: 155 Rugby Road, Charlottesville VA 22903

This event has met capacity. Stay tuned for more Fralin After Five programming announcements!

Led by artist and educator, Deborah Coffey, this Fralin After Five workshop connects to the current exhibition of Joseph Cornell’s shadow boxes. Like Cornell, you will make your own shadow box that incorporates small objects and images that mean something to you.  Cornell filled his shadow boxes with feathers, pipes, shells and marbles. You might include family photos, puzzle pieces, scrabble letters, stickers and clippings from magazines. Your poetic assemblage of tiny items tells a story, which may, as did Cornell’s, capture the feel of a distant time or a faraway place.

We will be using a mixed-media approach involving collage, assemblage, stamping, stenciling, painting and drawing. The story that emerges may be a delightful surprise to you.

The wooden shadow box (8.5” X 11”) and all essential materials and tools will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring in some of their own tiny items and background papers

Registration is required and space is limited.  This is an in-person workshop in the museum.
