Ansel Adams - A Legacy

06/07/2013 to 10/13/2013
Curated by William Sherman, Founding Director, OpenGrounds, and William Wylie, Adjunct Curator of Photography and Associate Chair for Studio Art, McIntire Department of Art

The photographs of the Meredith Collection are original works of legendary American photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984). Documenting the arc of his prolific career between the late 1920s and the early 1980s, the collection includes early works as Adams first explored his medium, and masterworks from his most productive period dating from the late 1930s through the 1950s. This exhibition, which features selections from the Meredith Collection, reveals Adams' commitment to photography, his passionate devotion to the American landscape, and the technical precision that defined his work. Adams had a profound impact on the medium, coupling photography's unique capacity to capture a singular perception with his recognition of the beauty, importance, and fragility of the landscapes he recorded.

This exhibition is made possible by Lynn and Tom Meredith, who have loaned their extraordinary collection to support the arts and environmental understanding at U.Va. The collection is being shown in conjunction with a group of contemporary photographers whose work is indebted to the legacy of Ansel Adams, as well as programs for public engagement through OpenGrounds.

The Fralin Museum of Art's programming is made possible by the generous support of The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.

The exhibition is made possible through the generous support of The Office of the Vice President for Research, OpenGrounds, Albemarle Magazine, and Ivy Publications LLC's Charlottesville Welcome Book.
